The first round of play in the OHA playoffs ended in unceremonious fashion as all four top contenders pressed on to the next round. Better luck next season to the bottom four that will now join the rest of the league for a round of golf, fore!

*Disclaimer: The Media Team will be changing the Power Ranking format for playoffs. We will not be doing Power Grid, 3 Star, POTW, or long-reads during playoffs. There will be an MVP prediction in the final week of play as well as a deep-dive into the cup finalists. Thistle and I thank you for reading all season long, good luck in playoffs!

  1. The Curse Reborn
  2. Cancel
  3. Evil Empire
  4. Ontario

The Contenders:

The Curse / Cancel / Evil Empire

Starting with The Curse, they came into playoffs as the odds-on favorite to win it all and after round one, not much has changed. Although they did lose the most games (2) during round one, they also played against arguably the best goalie in the league in Chelsnipes, so they get a pass and retain the first spot moving on to round two.

Next in a close second, Cancel proved that they are for real after all and did so in cool fashion as they advanced to the semi-finals. Although there are still question marks around the team, they dispelled the idea that they were “sheep in wolves clothing”, something that was made abundantly clear when they tagged Media after every period. Cancel definitely have the talent to contend, but a potential matchup in the finals is 50/50 at the moment and only time will tell.

Finally, Evil Empire find themselves in round two as a bit of an underdog at no real fault of their own. A dominant performance in round one was only further backed by Donny and Mike roasting challengers in the chirp channel. While there is certainly stiff competition going into the semi-finals, keep an eye on the Dark Horse candidate Evil Empire, they deserve a higher spot and they can do so this week.

The Pretenders:

Ontario

The Hitmen have a good-not-great team and had they matched up with a stronger team in round one, they might not even be here. While Red Deer were not a bad team, they certainly did not have the firepower or defense to supplant their incredible goaltending (shout-out Grigs and Geno, both of whom had performed admirably this whole season). While anything can happen, it’s pretty unlikely in the current state of affairs that Ontario will move forward. However, strangers things have happened of course.

Team MVP candidates:

Curse- l shotsy l

Cancel- x4thline

Empire- Chainer l88l

Hitmen- Andshad

..and by special request: Teams as Parks characters

Curse- Leslie Knope

Strong, talented, not all-that-serious. Oh and destined for success.

Cancel- Tom Haverford

Ambitious and highly-motivated to succeed (now) but still likely to faulter before the days (or in this case playoffs) end.

Empire- Ron Swanson

Do I even have to explain this one? @Donnywood.

Hitmen- Chris Traeger

On the surface they are well put together and look poised to dominate, but below lies a hollow shell that could probably use a little more meat.
